He sonically translates the build and release of tension in the body into a soundtrack that adds dramatic contour and meaning to the class. Each performance is spontaneous and improvised within a sophisticated structure that started as a four year old cello player. Since his younger days, Matt has whole-heartedly found his way to the Guzheng, also known as the zither or Chinese harp. He additionally weaves in a an eclectic array of worldly accessories to add a global spirit to the musical journey. Having practised yoga himself for nearly ten years, he understands the interior experience of the practice and aims to evoke this through sound. Join us and welcome Matt all the way from Montreal! Jerome and Michael Burdi
on Oud, Darbuka, Singing Bowls, American Indian Flute

Brothers Jerome and Michael Burdi create a blanket of meditative sounds brought on by a wave of percussive fire and heart. They use their inspiration and studies of traditional Middle Eastern rhythms to make "Brooklyn style" compositions and improvisations driven by the melody of the oud, an Arabic lute ancestor to the guitar. They credit their music to the fullness of life experience; particularly a trip to Brazil where they worked closely with a respected shaman and their travels through Mother India and musical Istanbul. In class they offer sound and rhythm to accent the moments of silence as you dial more fully into the breaths of your yoga practice. Join us for an evening of balance where we explore the yin in the yang and the yang in the yin. Clacks of percussion, strums of the oud and whispers of singing bowls will lead the way.

Kevin Courtney will be holding the reigns tonight as both teacher and musician along with his full band, Nada Sadhana - a music project born out of the experience of yoga and meditation and created with a simple intention: to produce music that facilitates the process of Yoga. The term ‘nada sadhana’ is sanskrit for, ‘The practice of listening to the rivers of sound’. The band’s first album, Volume 1: Brooklyn Sessions quickly became one of the most listened to albums in yoga studios across the country.   Acoustic strings, harmonium melodies and hypnotic beats meld to make organic grooves that provide the perfect instrumental soundtrack for movement and transformation.  In this rare live performance the music is refined to it’s most fundamental elements in an exploratory collaboration between you the practitioner, the collective energy of the class, and the musicians. The band is currently in the studio recording Volume II: Nosara Sessions to be released Spring 2014.

It's Winter Solstice, when the sun is at its southernmost point in the sky. Whether your into a play on numbers or historical mystery, 12/21/12 is a special date, where it's said to be the end of the Mayan calendar and the beginning of a new world. The Maya's message is simple: 'Our actions have created a world out of balance that must be rebalanced immediately in order for us to avoid more suffering…to humans and to all life.' We are already seeing many changes. And this special day is a window to focus our energies, intentions, and prayers more fully and profoundly than ever before. As we explore the balance between motion and stillness in breath and body, Hannah + Liron, who have been collaborating for 7 years, will conduct the sound for this eve. Hannah Thiem on violin/electronic backdrops, (Copal, Nyxyss) is a soulful inspired artist stirring emotion and fluidity with Middle Eastern, Eastern European and Nordic flavors. She's opened for The Rolling Stones, Bassnectar, Quixotic, and Shpongle and has been touring the yoga scene for some time. Liron Peled, on doumbek/Tuvan throat singing/sazytar, has worked with artists such as Balkan Beat Box and Omar Faruk Tekbilek. He is actively touring to inspire audiences by helping them reach altered states of consciousness naturally through music, combining sufi trance elements from the Middle East with Meditative Tuvan throat singing and the powerful and rich bass sound of dubstep and metal. This is a night to sweat your intentions, breathe your prayers, drop deep into body, and clarify direction.

Garth Stevenson ~ standup double bass ~ www.garthstevenson.com

Witness meditation as movement. Glide into the zone, become entranced with breath, and ripple through the sounds of bassy strings. Brooklyn-based composer and double bassist, Garth Stevenson, draws most of his creative inspiration from the natural landscapes beyond the metropolis in which he's lived for the bulk of his twenties. Garth was raised in the mountains of British Columbia where nature became his primary inspiration and the common thread between his life and music. In the past four years,  he's released two full-length solo albums, informed by his experiences carrying his 150-year-old double bass to the woods, beach, and desert. His most recent and critically acclaimed release, Flying, is an adulation to a recent life-changing trip to Antarctica. Of Flying, iTunes praises, “Garth Stevenson joins the likes of Brian Eno, Sigur Rós, and David Sylvian as a practitioner of this ethereal yet accessible genre."

He's a member of the bands Sky White Tiger, The Smooth Maria, Kinan Azmeh’s CityBand, and Tall Tall Trees plus is in the midst of recording a solo album. It's rare to get a seat this close yogis!

His most recent and critically acclaimed release, Flying, is an adulation to a recent life-changing trip to Antarctica as well as his work playing in yoga classes with Elena Brower for the past three years (including a class in Paris for France’s largest yoga gathering in history for over 3000 people in front of the Eiffel Tower!)  Of Flying, iTunes praises, “Garth Stevenson joins the likes of Brian Eno, Sigur Rós, and David Sylvian as a practitioner of this ethereal yet accessible genre." Mmm hmm. We love you.
